In the context of an increased population compared to the previous academic year by 19%, in the A.Y. 2018/2018 Italian universities counted 151 Sudanese students (source). In addition to that, several Sudanese researchers and scientists come to Italy, to enhance their capabilities especially in the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and The World Academy of Science (TWAS) in Trieste, the latter having amongst its founding fathers the Sudanese scientist Mohamed H.A. Hassan. Furthermore, 6 agreements of cooperation are now active between Italian and Sudanese universities (source).

There are currently a number of active programs of scholarships for deserving Sudanese students who wish to complete their studies in Italy.

With regard to the scholarships offered by the Italian Government, since 2013 Sudan is one of the beneficiary countries. Moreover, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI) disburses scholarships for Sudanese students: in 2018/19, the Ministry offered 27 monthly allowances of € 900.
