Italian teaching in Sudan


“Leonardo Da Vinci” Library and Reading Room

The “Leonardo Da Vinci” Library and Reading Room was inaugurated and opened to the public on 28 Novermber 2013 as an area for the promotion  of the Italian Language and Culture created  at the Library of the University of Khartoum (previously Gen Gordon College, the oldest and most prestigious university in Sudan). 
The “Leonardo da Vinci” consists of a library and a reading room, a classroom and a courtyard where to organize cultural events and screenings of movies or documentaries.  It has been conceived and then realize by the Italian Embassy with the contribution of some Italian entrepreneurs and with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs which provided part of the books and the equipment. Other contributions came from the Italian Istituto Luce which gave some audiovisual material and the Italian Community which is giving books and newspapers in Italian for the Library.
The “Leonardo Da Vinci” Library and Reading Room”,  not only hosts the Italian Language courses (attivati) at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Khartoum thanks to support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but it also wants to reply to the growing “request of Italy”  che si riscontra a Khartoum also at the cultural and artistic level.

Italian Language Courses at the Comboni College

Since 2002, the Comboni College of Science and Technology offers courses in Italian language approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sudan. In 2012, this institution has started a university degree in English Language and Literature, which includes the Italian language as a compulsory subject for all students. 
In the same year, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Community, a multimedia classroom for the teaching of Italian language and culture -was opened at the Comboni College.  There are Italian language courses at different levels open to all. 
The Comboni College of Science and Technology also has a language laboratory equipped with digital material for in-depth study of the Italian language.

Scholarships

There are currently a number of active programs of scholarships for deserving Sudanese students who wish to complete their studies in Italy.
With regard to the scholarships offered by the Italian Government(http://www.esteri.it/MAE/IT/Ministero/Servizi/Stranieri/Opportunita/BorseStudio_stranieri.htm) since 2013 Sudan is one of the beneficiary countries and, thanks to this program, currently two Sudanese students are studying in Italy at the Politecnico di Torino and the Universita 'degli Studi di Catania.  

Since 2014 the program of scholarships offered by the Italian "Rondine Cittadella della Pace" (www.rondine.org) and supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was extended to Sudan. Thanks to the support of the DAL Group, for the AA 2014-2015 two Sudanese students were offered the opportunity to participate in an extensive program of activities of confidence building and to continue their postgraduate studies in Italy.
Among the cooperation programs supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is also included the University Master's Degree in international health and medicine for cooperation with developing countries proposed by the Universita’ degli Studi di Parma  (http://www.unipr.it/node/9240).
